1Sometimes life can get very busy. Often, reaching our goals can destroy our ability to enjoy a good laugh. We all are familiar with the well-known proverb that says to always laugh when you can, since laughter is the cheapest medicine.

Laughter stimulates the release of endorphins, the socalled feel-good hormones. This has a positive influence on our mental and physical wellbeing. A study done by Dr. Michae Titze concluded that in the 50s people laughed for eighteen minutes a day, whereas today this number has decreased to six minutes. The study suggests that laughter is disappearing very fast. Even though in this millennium the standards of living have skyrocketed, our generation cannot find happiness.  

Laughter has many health benefits. It is good to remind ourselves that a day without laughter is a day wasted.

Laughter is the shortest distance between two people. A research study by Dr. Alan Gray at the University College London, states that the act of laughing makes a person more open to new people. This is very helpful in improving relationships. Indeed everybody laughs in the same language.

Another study conducted at the Loma Linda University found that laughter can boost memory and lower stress. It reduces the stress hormone cortisol and it sharpens the memory. Laughter also improves cognitive functions.

Laughter makes people more resilient. It is a great escape from a stressful situation. According to a study led by Dr. Erica J. Boothby, a Yale psychologist, laughing regulates our emotions when facing a challenge.

Laughing also improves the cardiovascular health in that it lowers blood pressure and it increases good cholesterol. Research at Loma Linda University found that laughter also boosts the immune system and it promotes the fighting cells in our body.  

A good laugh can give you a belly workout. Dr. Madan Kataria, says that laughter is a mild and extremely pleasant aerobic exercise. Research has found that one minute of laughter is as productive as a 10 minute workout on a rowing machine. Furthermore laughing makes a person more attractive, thus being a very wanted trait in romantics.

Laughter can be like a ray of light in everybody’s life. We have to remember that even the earth laughs in flowers. Laughter and a good sense of humor should be everybody’s companion in their everyday life. With virtually no side effects, laughing can make the world a better place in which we can all contribute. Just like Mother Teresa said “Peace begins with a smile”.
