Everybody knows that napping is a childish regular habit. However there are plenty of people who enjoy a good daily snooze. And there comes a good news for all those people: A nap a day can really save your life.

It seems Margaret Thatcher and Winston Churchill know perfectly what to do around 3 pm.

A new study, presented at the European Society of Cardiology annual conference in London, examined nearly 400 middle-aged men and women with hypertension, a condition where blood pressure is constantly abnormally high.

The study showed that midday sleepers had a 5% lower average 24-hour systolic blood pressure compared to patients who did not nap at midday. According to Dr Kallistratos although the reductions seemed low, even modest reductions could cut the risk of cardiovascular events, such as heart attack and stroke, by up to 10 per cent.

The researchers also found that in midday sleepers pulse wave velocity levels were 11% lower and left atrium diameter was 5% smaller. "These findings suggest that midday sleepers have less damage from high blood pressure in their arteries and heart," said Dr Kallistratos.

He concluded: “Our study shows that not only is midday sleep associated with lower blood pressure, but longer sleeps are even more beneficial.

“We found that midday sleep is associated with lower 24 hour blood pressure, an enhanced fall of BP in night, and less damage to the arteries and the heart. The longer the midday sleep, the lower the systolic BP levels and probably fewer drugs needed to lower BP."

So, do whatever you want all day, but around the midday you should take a nap to satisfy not only your brain, but mostly your heart and blood pressure.
